A former Trade and Industry Minister under the John Dramani Mahama led-government and National Democratic Congress, (NDC), Flagbearer hopeful, Dr. Ekwow Spio-Garbrah has stated that, NDC members nationwide are calling for leadership change in order to win the 2020 general elections.

According to him, results of the party’s recent branch, constituency and regional executive elections indicate that there is a high demand for change, “The strong wind of change within NDC—the Tsunami effect of 1000 versus 260,000+”.

He said the demand for change by grassroots members of the previous has led to the removal of most executives whose conduct may have contributed to the party’s abysmal 2016 presidential elections.

Addressing journalists and NDC supporters in Accra to officially launch his campaign for the flagbearership race of the opposition NDC, Spio noted tha “so far, some 75-85% of all previous executives have been replaced at all levels, for an average replacement rate of 80%. This change was particularly evident in the fact that of the ten 2016 Regional Chairmen who signed a statement last year in favor of one candidate, only two survived the Tsunami”.

At the Party HQ, more than 80% of all the FEC members are having to seek a new position within the Secretariat in order to stand a chance of re-election, or else are not standing at all for re-election, he added.

He reiterated the fact that “the NDC lost the 2016 elections partly due to a number of ailments that have reportedly been chronicled in the invisible report from Dr. Kwesi Botchwey and his team. The electoral loss has caused some past leaders to have called the NDC in 2016 as “a lame horse” which obviously could not have won a race.

It is these perceptions or recognition of the internal weakness that reportedly led to the party’s ignominious defeat while in power that have led the Spio Campaign Team to propose a 7-point agenda aimed at restoring the many strengths of the NDC.

He was optimistic that, “this huge demand for new leaders in the party will soon be evident in the election of national party executives as well as in the choice of a flagbearer”.

Dr. Gabrah however, I pledged to work with all groups within and affiliated with the NDC to build a solid party, with innovative structures that will sustain the party’s social-democratic values, “long with other aspirants, we will pursue the trio-principles of probity, integrity and accountability, which values have shaped the people-centered orientation of our great party”.

The matter of party unity is my top-most concern, as we move ahead.Former appointees of the recent NDC government therefore need not fear that they will be discriminated against when I assume the Presidency of Ghana, he assured party supporters.
