Police have arrested one individual accused of tearing down a candidate’s posters at the NDC party office in Akwatia, where a by-election is underway.
Security officers stepped in quickly, allowing the voting process to continue smoothly. Authorities have cautioned that any attempts to disrupt the polls, whether through intimidation, destruction of materials, or violence, will be dealt with firmly.
The by-election follows the passing of Ernest Kumi, the late Member of Parliament for Akwatia, creating the need to elect a new legislator.
Over 50,000 eligible voters are expected to cast their ballots in the fiercely contested race between Bernard Bediako Baidoo of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Solomon Kwame Asumadu of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Both political parties have mounted energetic campaigns in recent weeks, with support from senior leaders and national executives who toured the constituency to rally their bases.
To secure the process, the Ghana Police Service has stationed more than 5,500 officers across the constituency, while the Electoral Commission has reiterated its commitment to delivering a credible and transparent election.
Residents have also been encouraged to vote peacefully and adhere to electoral guidelines.
