President Akufo-Addo says he will not set aside due process in the fight against corruption. Despite criticisms from the public in handling allegations of corruption against some of his appointees, the President said his administration has taken the boldest initiative in the history of the nation in its fight against Corruption.

Speaking at an International Conference on Anti-Corruption in Accra, focused on building a culture of integrity for generations President Akufo-Addo said the fight against Corruption is not in words, but, deeds.

He said the Budget for anti corruption agencies such as the Police, CHRAJ, and the Audit Service have seen unprecedented increase.

Corruption is a complex social, political and economic phenomenon that affects all countries.  Corruption undermines democratic institutions, slows economic development and contributes to governmental instability.

Corruption also attacks the foundation of democratic institutions by distorting electoral processes, perverting the rule of law and creating bureaucratic quagmires whose only reason for existing is the solicitation of bribes. It is for this reason that the UN in 2003 designated December 9 as International Anti-Corruption Day, to raise awareness of corruption and of the role of the Convention in combating and preventing it.

The 2021 International Anti-Corruption Day seeks to highlight the rights and responsibilities of all, including States, Government Officials, Civil Servants, Law Enforcement Officers,  the Media, the Private Sector, Civil Society, Academia, the Public and Youth,  in tackling corruption.

A Justice of the Supreme Court, Yoni Kolendi noted that the Judicial service is a key partner in the fight against Corruption. He said this role will be carried out without fear or favour.

President Akufo-Addo said despite previous initiatives by successive governments to fight the canker, corruption is still prevalent in the society.

He said allegations of corruption against his appointees have been investigated and those found culpable prosecuted. He said it is unfair to tag him as a ‘clearing agent’ when he is not the investigating authority.

The President said existing legislation on the conduct of public officers is not enough to deter corruption.

”A ‘fix for purpose’ legislation is needed and commended the Attorney General for leading efforts in enacting a new law”.

The President also spoke about measures taken by his administration to fight the canker and protect the public purse.
