“Promises upon Promises”, some Ghanaians speak ahead of Dr. Bawumia’s address

By Adiza Bawa and Jacob Aggrey

Vice President of Ghana Dr. Bawumia is expected to address Ghanaians today, April 7, 2022 at the Millennium City in Kasoa Yesukrom, about the current state of the economy.

Following the continuous price hikes on fuel and commodities and the depreciation of the cedi, there have been calls for Dr. Bawumia as the leader of the Economic Management Team to address the issues publicly.

To this end, GBC News sought to gather the views of some Ghanaians in Accra on their expectations of the address.

A general consensus among some Ghanaians speaking with GBC News disclosed that they were not expecting anything new from the address because it will be filled with propaganda.

“His state of the nation’s address that he is going to speak is not going to change anything aside promises upon promises and lies”.

Maame Ama in Adabraka added that” I don’t think anyone would want to listen to him because all he has ever done since he came to power is to either add up to the taxes or electronic levy. The electronic system is not what we need as a nation right now. There are so many things that need urgent attention in the country. He is not going to say anything important or that will help the country”.

Chelsea, a resident of Devtraco Estate noted that “I am not expecting anything new, we all know the current State of the economy”

They said in opposition, Dr Bamumia was effective and outspoken but now the realities have exposed his true nature.

“I am not expecting anything from Dr. Bawumia’s State of the nation’s economy. He has actually disappointed me personally. His utterances when he was in opposition is actually different from what he is doing right now. The state of the dollar is falling compared to when he was in opposition.

Some people were however eager for the Vice President to give an in depth understanding on inflation and depreciation of the cedi.

“One thing I will be looking out for is how he would reconcile the things he said in opposition and the realities now, for example on the depreciation of the cedi. I am also looking at for his views on the e-levy, his silence on it has become a problem, you know that in the initial stages he said he was not in support of it, I want to hear his views now.

“Ghanaians will like to know more about the e levy, what its going to be used for, how much they are planing to get at the end of the fiscal year, how much is it going to cost Ghanaians to pay that kind of tax”.

Some people discouraged the Vice President from presenting the address because in their view nothing would change on the current State of the economy.

“Dr Bawumia’s State of the Nation address is nothing that is going to encourage us. I am not expecting anything It’s better he doesn’t give the state of the economy because all he has been saying when he came to power has not been beneficial to us, some citizens said”.
