The Electoral Commission has described as false, assertions allegedly made by an NDC agent and carried by Joy News which depict the burning of ballot papers.

A statement issued by the Commission indicated that the assertions which were made in a video recording should be disregarded by the public.

The EC explained that seven local printing houses were engaged to print the 2020 Presidential and Parliamentary ballot papers and as such, there is always waste or damaged ballots that are shredded by each printing house in the presence of Political Party Agents.

These shredded ballots, the EC says, are then burnt in incinerators together with the plates that bear the design of each ballot.

The EC emphasised that the burning takes place in incinerators owned and located within some printing houses such as Buck Press, and in public incinerating sites if the printing houses do not have such a plant.

The Political Party Agents located in the printing houses are informed about the shredding and burning of waste ballots and as part of the process, they are made to sign an undertaking of consent.

This is a routine process that has been in place at the Electoral Commission.
