The Center for Local Governance Advocacy has called on President Akufo-Addo to withdraw the nomination of Municipal, Metropolitan, District, Chief Executives, MMDCEs, who fail to secure the needed votes for approval after two rounds of voting and present a different nominee.

The group is also asking the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Integration to review its Standing Orders for MMDAs to prevent unpopular nominees from becoming MMDCEs.

In an interview with GBC News, Executive Director of the group, Dr. Vladimir Antwi Danso explained that the move would help to avoid conflicts and deepen democracy within the Local Governance Sector.

“We believe that the change in 2019 where the President can continue to nominate a person as many times as possible even if he or she is rejected 2 or 3 times does not help in strengthening the local governance base. The President has to reject such nominations and put forward another person in such instances”, according to Dr. Antwi Danso.
