A Justice Designate to the Supreme Court, Prof Nii Ashie Kotey, has called for a review of the powers of the Supreme Court.
He said the court’s jurisdiction is too extensive and should be reviewed.
Answering questions from members of the Appointments Committee of Parliament during his vetting, Prof Kotey said proposed amendment to the law such that apart from cases where the Supreme Court has original jurisdiction, appeals which emanate from the lower courts will not be automatic, but with leave of the court.
Prof Kotey said when approved, he would like to work towards deepening the values and principles of the Ghanaian society as outlined in the constitution.
These values he said include promotion of freedom and justice, liberty, probity and accountability, the rule of law, democracy and human rights.
