The debates from Parliament: Why 2023 Budget got approved without provision for National Cathedral

Parliament has approved two hundred and 27 billion, seven hundred and 21 million, one hundred and 82 thousand, nine hundred and 58 Ghana cedis as the budgetary appropriation for next year.

The House has however scraped the 80 million cedi request by the government for the National Cathedral project.

Chairperson of the Trade, Industry and Tourism Committee, Carlos Kingsley Ahenkorah said, ”when the issue of the Cathedral issue came at the Committee level, it was put to a vote at which the majority of members voted against allocating money for the Cathedral.”

Thar Ranking Member on the Committee, Emmanuel Armah Kofi Buah said more pressing areas needed money than the Cathedral.

The Assin-Central MP, Kenedy Ohene Agyapong urged members to look at the Commercial Dividends and support the building of the Cathedral.

From the viewpoint of the Pru East MP, Dr. Kwabena Donkor, government has all this while not been supporting the building of the many Cathedrals in the country, he did not see why this time round.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Majority Leader, Alexander Afenyo -Markin then made it known to the House that upon further consultation with the Finance Minister, the 80 million cedis will however be split between the Ministries of Roads and Highways and Communication and Digitalisation.

However, when it got to the consideration of the Appropriation Bill, the 80 million cedis was totally scraped.
