NDC Chair debunks claims that high filing fee could create room for corruption

The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress, (NDC), Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo says the non-refundable filing fee of four hundred thousand cedis for flagbearer aspirants is a source of funding for logistics and other activities towards the congress.

It will also give the party the opportunity to know how resourceful the aspirants are in attracting funds.

Speaking on Radio Ghana’s Current Affairs Programme “Behind The News” with Ibrahim Kwarteng , Mr. Ofosu-Ampofo debunked claims that the high filing fee has the potential of creating room for corruption.

Also on whether the party will consider reviewing the filing fee, Mr. Ofosu-Ampofo said if a petition is brought before the Executive to that effect, they will look at it.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) on Thursday announced that a GHC 400,000 non-refundable filing fee would be paid by its presidential aspirants contesting the January 19, primaries.

Female contestants will, however, pay GHC 200,000 while People With Disabilities (PWDs) contestants will pay an amount of GHC 150,000, Mr. Johnson Asiedu-Nketia, the General Secretary said.

Briefing the media on the “Road map for NDC Presidential Primaries” in Accra, he said payment of the filing fees would be made by banker’s draft.

Mr. Asiedu-Nketia said the election of the presidential candidate would be held on the 19th January, 2019 at all the 275 constituency centres -voting centres for the elections.

However, he said, the national headquarters would also constitute an additional voting centre for all delegates from external branches.

So far eleven people have officially declared their intent to contest the primaries.
