The Article 146 Committee of Inquiry, which is investigating three petitions calling for the removal of Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, has on Monday, September 1, 2025, submitted its first report to President John Dramani Mahama at the Jubilee House in Accra.

The report was presented at a brief ceremony at the Presidency by the Committee’s Chair, Justice Gabriel Pwamang. He explained that the panel worked strictly in line with Article 146 of the Constitution, holding its sittings in camera as required. He stressed that private hearings did not mean secrecy, but rather a process that protects the integrity of proceedings.

Justice Pwamang revealed that the first petition, filed by Mr. Daniel Ofori, saw evidence presented by 13 witnesses. The Chief Justice also testified and called 12 witnesses, including experts, to defend herself. Altogether, the committee examined nearly 10,000 pages of documents, with each side represented by four lawyers.

“After careful and impartial assessment of all the evidence, we have arrived at a recommendation on the first petition,” Justice Pwamang said before handing the sealed report to the President.

He also disclosed that both the second petitioner and the Chief Justice requested an adjournment in respect of the second petition. The committee therefore postponed that hearing and will submit its findings on the second and third petitions at a later date.
