There are indications of renewed tension between the residents, land owners, and a mining company, the “Rich Power Mining Ghana Limited” in Zangbeyire in the Upper East over a mining concession.

In 2014, residents of Zangbeyire and some landowners accused the management of the mining Company of not following due process for community entry and sensitisation procedures, per the Mining laws, before carrying out mining activities in the area.

The situation at the time led to communal clashes between sub-community groups and staff of the company resulting in the burning of some equipment belonging to the mining Company and the arrest of some indigenes.

Speaking to GBC’s Radio Ghana, the residents and land owners say they have picked up signals that some government authorities and traditional rulers in the area have gone into deals with the Rich Power Mining Company to return to work in the community, without due process.

The group stated in a letter addressed to the Upper East Region and Minister that, it is clear that the stage is set for conflict in the Zangbeyire area.

The indigenes say they will resist any attempt by the powers that be to allow the Rich Power Mining Company to return to the community to resume work.

Rich Power Mining, an associate of Shaanxi Mining Ghana Limited, a Chinese Mining Company, moved to the area in 2013 after securing a licence to do prospecting within 38,919 (thirty-eight thousand, nine hundred and nineteen) acres.
