Upper West: EC committed to ensuring free, fair election

The Electoral Commission (EC) has restated its commitment to ensuring a free and fair election.

The EC said to achieve this, all challenges in the processes leading up to the general election are being dealt with. Furthermore, the EC is making two major additions to the structure of the general election.

Speaking to GBC’s Mark Smith, the Upper West Regional Director of the EC, Ali Adamu Osman said the two changes are the inclusion of COVID-19 ambassadors at all polling stations across the country and the establishment of an extra coalition centre at the regional level.

Mr Osman said the COVID-19 ambassadors are to ensure that voters adhere strictly to all the health protocols to help manage the transmission of the disease.

“We will be having the Presiding Officer on the election day. We will also have the Names Reference List Officer, the Verification Officer and the two Ballot Issuers and the day we will have another person who will be COVID-19 Ambassador. The person will ensure all the health protocols are adhered to. This will include ensuring there are veronica buckets with water, sanitizers present at the polling station,” he said.

The Electoral Commission of Ghana is the official body in Ghana responsible for all public elections. The Upper West Regional Director of the EC, Ali Adamu Osman said the recently scheduled the compilation of the transferred voters list and the proxy voters’ list for the 2020 Presidential and Parliamentary elections in the region was successful.

He said despite the initial challenges students faced, the overall exercise was successful.

Mr Osman said an extra coalition centre will be set up at the regional level to help with the coalition of presidential poll results.

Mr Osman said the next major activity for the EC is the compilation of the Special Voters’ List. The special voting will then be conducted on the 1st day of December.

In the Upper West Region, 33 persons had successful filed their nomination to contest for Parliamentary seats.

Mr Osman called for peace before, during and after the election. He implored all registered voters to adhere to election rules and regulations at the various polling stations across the country.
