President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Wednesday, December 5, 2018 inspected construction works at the Madina – Adentan Road Footbridge Project, in day 2 of his 3-day tour of the Greater Accra Region.

The project, forms part of the Tetteh – Mamfe Road project, which include the construction of access ramps to footbridges on the 5.6 kilometre Madina – Pantang Section of the road.

Deputy Director of Urban Roads, Kwasi Nuamah, acompanied by Alhaji Boniface Saddique, Member of Parliament for Madina, the Minister of Roads and Highways, kwasi Amoako Atta, and the contractor for the project, Justice Amoh, took the President through the architectural designs of the project, and the various stages of completion of the project.

The construction works to be done include Re-configuration of the intersection and realignment of the signal poles, replacement of as signal heads and controller equipment, UPS systemswith 48hour Autonomy, roadline markings on all approaches to the intersections, and others.

The road corridor, forms one of the primary North –South arterial roads, connecting the central business district of Accra, with average daily traffic in excess of 30,000. It further serves some of the north eastern suburbs of the Greater Accra Region area.

The six (6) uncompleted footbridges on the stretch, recently, generated discontent among Ghanaians, particularly residents of Madina – Adentan, which attracted much discussions on the airwaves –radio, television, and newspapers.

The 6 footbridges which began in the previous government, eight (8) years ago, had stalled due to constructural and financial challenges.

President Akufo-Addo’s administration after assuming office, in 2017, began to fix the bridges by initiating the procurement processes towards the completion of the project.

However, the process, according to residents of Madina and Adenta, was slow, in view of the increasing number of deaths on that road, due to frequent knock downs of perdestrains by uncoming vehicles plying that road.

The Procurement processes – which coincided with demonstrations by residents of Madina and Adentan, and, radio discussions, kick started the construction of the footbridges to reduce, and, or eliminate those accidents.

The footbridge project, which are in various stages of completion, has Justmoh Construction Limited, as the main constractor, and, are expected to be completed in June, 2019.

One of the contractors working on one of the six footbridges,  Justice Amoh, of Justmoh Constructions said they do not envisage hitches in the work, and hope to complete the project ahead of time.
Deputy Director of Urban Roads, Kwasi Nuamah, also told the President that the six footbridges were awarded to separate contractors to ensure early completion.
He said the necessary safety measures had been incorporated into the construction of the footbridges to make them pedestrian friendly.
President Akufo-Addo, after being apprised on the state of the project, said he looked forward to the timely completion of the footbridges.
