President John Dramani Mahama has dissolved the 15-member governing board of the National Sports Authority (NSA) with immediate effect, in a directive issued on 2 September 2026. The board, chaired by Dr Fred Awaah and sworn in December 2025, is among nine state institution boards dissolved in the same announcement.
Board composition
Members included NSA Director-General Yaw Ampofo Ankrah; representatives from the National Sports College, Ministries of Sports, Finance and Education; the Security Services Sports Association; tertiary institutions; the National Paralympic Committee; Ghana Olympic Committee; and distinguished sporting personalities, plus an additional member.
Next steps and context
The Presidency says the boards will be reconstituted “in due course”, with sector ministers directed to implement the decision under existing laws, but gave no specific reason for the dissolution. The move comes amid public concern over deteriorating facilities such as Accra and Baba Yara stadia, and as the Black Stars prepare to host The Gambia in a key 2027 AFCON qualifier later this month.
