President John Dramani Mahama has presented relief items to victims of the recent floods in Hohoe in the Volta Region, reaffirming the government’s commitment to stand with affected communities in times of disaster.
The President, who visited the flood-hit areas today, Friday, October 2, 2026 to commiserate with the victims and assess the extent of damage, also announced additional support from the private sector to aid reconstruction and recovery efforts.
“The owner of Dzata Cement who happens to be my younger brother has promised 5,000 bags of cement to help those affected,” President Mahama disclosed during the presentation.
He said the donation of cement is intended to support the rebuilding of damaged homes and structures and to help affected families recover quickly from the disaster.
President Mahama also conveyed a message of sympathy from his wife, First Lady Lordina Mahama.
“My wife, Lordina, extends her sympathies; when she heard of the flood, her first question was, ‘Has it affected my hospital?'” he stated.
The floods, which followed heavy rains on Monday, September 28, 2026, displaced several residents, destroyed properties and disrupted livelihoods in parts of Hohoe, prompting calls for urgent government intervention.
Presenting the relief items, which included food, bedding, roofing sheets and other essential supplies, President Mahama assured the victims that the government will continue to mobilize support to alleviate their plight and implement measures to reduce the recurrence of such disasters.

He urged the Regional and Municipal authorities to work closely with the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) to ensure that relief reaches all affected persons and that proper planning is put in place to prevent future flooding.
On his part, the Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, expressed profound gratitude to the President for his swift response and personal presence in the region.
“Your Excellency, you have once again demonstrated that you are with us…Volta Region will forever remain grateful to you,” Mr. Gunu said.
He described the President’s gesture as a clear demonstration of compassionate leadership and noted that the people of the Volta Region have always counted on President Mahama in difficult times.
