Former Government Spokesperson on Governance and Security, Dr. Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, has urged President John Dramani Mahama to prioritise the rising issue of street prostitution in Ghana.
Speaking during a panel discussion on the GTV Breakfast Show, Dr. Boakye-Danquah expressed concern about the increasing number of young women involved in commercial sex work, particularly in parts of Accra.
“There are a lot of female prostitutes in this country walking on the streets of Osu, East Legon, among others. The President must pay attention to the growing number of prostitutes in the country,” he stated.
Palgrave Boakye-Danquah alleged that many of the young women involved are foreign nationals. “A lot of them are Nigerians, and they are between the ages of 16, 17, 18, 19, and 20. People bring them into this country on contract,” he claimed.
He further indicated that through personal interactions with some of the women, he had learned that many come from remote parts of Nigeria and may have been trafficked or lured into exploitative arrangements.
As national conversations continue around LGBTQ+ issues, Dr. Boakye-Danquah urged the government to broaden its focus. “As we look at LGBTQ, the government should also focus its attention on prostitutes,” he emphasized.
