The National Democratic Congress (NDC) ended its three-day prayers and fasting Sunday, March 22 with a call by former President John Dramani Mahama for Ghanaians to hold fast to the preventive measures against contracting COVID-19.
“They are our first line of defence as individuals, and a collective responsibility. They are currently the only means by which we can slow down this dreadful virus and provide enough time to mount a robust response,” he stated.
Addressing Ghanaians through his Facebook page, which broadcast the church service to end the three-day prayer and fast, former President Mahama, who is also the NDC’s flag bearer for the 2020 election, urged Ghanaians to maintain a safe distance from any person who was coughing or sneezing, or from anyone showing any other symptoms of a cold or flu.
He also reminded Ghanaians of the national-day-of -prayer and fasting on Wednesday, March 25, 2020 as announced by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
Action
He pledged his support to assist the government in whatever way possible, and whenever called upon, to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I will continue to extend a helping hand to the government and to share our experience in managing the Ebola crisis. I do so with an open mind and a willing heart. And I hope that gesture will be received in the sincerity it is offered. The enemy before us is no respecter of person or party. We are all in this together,” he stated.
He said the current situation very much evoked the teaching of Martin Luther King Jnr that faith was based on the essence of man’s bond with God and his obligations to his neighbour.
“The essence of this teaching by Luther extends beyond faith. It is a message of planning and preparedness, of thoughtfulness and mutual responsibility. It is a message of caution and of courage. And it is a message of the endurance of the human spirit in the face of difficulty, death and destruction,” he stated.
Former President Mahama, therefore, called on Ghanaians to be united to preserve life, by abiding by the guidance of the experts and, in so doing, protecting the vulnerable.
Sermon
Delivering the sermon on the theme: “God will heal our land”, a former Moderator of the Global Evangelical Church, Rt Rev. Dr Emmanuel Komla Gbordzoe, reminded Ghanaians that prayer was a way of life and not just an act.
He expressed the hope that God would save the country from the COVID-19 pandemic but urged Ghanaians to repent from their rebellious way of life including shedding of blood and sinful ways.
