The Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, has made donations to support the upcoming Inter-Regional Wheelchair Basketball Championship to be held at the Ho Sports Stadium.
The donation was received by the leadership of the Volta Para Sports and Mobility Empowerment Association (VPMEA), led by its President, Madam Betty Gharbin, who paid a courtesy call on the Minister ahead of the 5-day tournament scheduled for 13th to 17th August 2026.
Speaking during the meeting, the President of VPMEA, Betty Gharbin, said the event will bring together athletes from five regions, with an estimated 150 participants expected.
The event aims to whip up interest in para sports in the Volta Region.
The Association outlined key areas of need including wheelchairs, security, transportation, and logistics for the smooth running of the games.
Mr. Gunu commended the Association for its efforts to develop para sports in the region.
He urged organizers to host the event to a high standard and charged the athletes to compete to win.
He also encouraged athletes and technical officials to prepare and train adequately.
In addition to the rice and cash donation, the Minister pledged to engage the Ghana Police Service to provide security during the event, and Metro Mass Transit to provide transport for the teams to and from venues over the 5 days.
The leadership of VPMEA expressed gratitude for the support, saying it will help ensure a successful and inclusive tournament.
The upcoming Inter-Regional Wheelchair Basketball Tournament in Ho will be the 6th edition of the competition.
