A renowned broadcaster, Cornelia Amoah has authored a book in honor of 50 Ghanaian women for their exclusive pioneering and excellent role in Ghana’s development.
Madam Cornelia Amoah, a retired newscaster with the state broadcaster, Ghana Broadcasting Corporation, (GBC) authored the 390 page book, title “Women of Distinction Ghana; Journey to the Top.”
The book produced within a period of four years, is a collection of archives of success stories of the 50 distinguished Ghanaian women from various field of discipline; Law, Entrepreneurs, Politics, Communication, Academia, Health, Geography, Security, among other areas.
It featured celebrated personalities such as the Ghana Flag Designer, Mrs. Theodosia Okoh, former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, two female former President of the Ghana Journalists Association, Gifty Afenyi-Dadzie and Adjoa Yeboah-Afari and the first female Head of the Department of History at the University of Ghana, Professor Akosua Perbi.
Also notably captured are the first female Maritime Educator in the World, Merchant Navy Captain Hannah Aggrey, the first female Director-General of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Eva Lokko, former Chief Executive of Ghana Chambers of Mines, Joyce Aryee, amongst others.
Presenting a complimentary copy of the book to the Ghana Journalists Association ( GJA), Madam Cornelia Amoah said, the book was authored as a way of honouring fellow Ghanaian women who distinguished themselves creditably and pioneered in various field of discipline to build Ghana.
In her complimentary copy to the GJA last Wednesday in Accra, she writes, ” when Busumuru Kofi Annan was laid in State at AICC, with my compliment to the Ghana Journalists Association, in furtherance of Knowledge and for the Passion to identify and celebrate HEROS and Heroine, wherever they are.”
She said, one constant attribute of all the 50 distinguished women featured in the book was their persistence to achieve greater heights, stating, ” I think we have more than 50 distinct women as my initial plan was for 100 of them.”
Cornelia Amoah explained that her encounter with these women in the course of her career prompted her to put together their stories which would serve as motivation and history for the young ones.
She added that, she is working on another volume of the book which would be much interesting to read as a lot of people would now scrutinize the kind of personalities that would be featured in the book.
Ms. Amoah is of the view, the saying that “if you want to hide something from an African, put it in a book” is long gone and that people now read and are eager to know what one write.
She also gave the assurance that women in the informal sector will be considered in her subsequent editions of the book.
The retired Journalist however, encouraged young women to be determined and resolute in their struggle to achieve success and that despite the achievement of those great women, much needed to be done to address inequality against women.
“One of the ways to correct the disparity is by writing a book like this that will expose the nation and the world to the caliber of women that we have in our society,” Madam Amoah stated.
The book is mainly about the 50 women who excelled in their field of endeavor.
The President of GJA, Roland Affail Monney, who received the book on behalf of the Association, thanked Madam Amoah for her foresight in coming out with such a novelty to honor women of distinction in Ghana.
He however urged his colleague Media practitioners in the country to emulate the courageous step taken by the retired broadcaster and continue to impact more knowledge on society even when they are on retirement.
He further assured that the book will be kept in the GJA library for the benefit of members.
