Obstetrician and Gynecologist, Dr. Issac Tettey Secorm speaking on GTV’s breakfast show on November 17 , 2025 revealed that fibroids is non-cancerous growths that develop in and around the uterus.

He explained that most women remain are unaware of the condition because the commonest symptom is no symptom at all, making routine checks critical.

Dr. Issac  explained that fibroids are caused by abnormal multiplication of cells in the wall of the uterus. Depending on where these cells grow, fibroids may bulge inside the womb, within the uterine muscle, or outward from the uterus.

While fibroids are non-cancerous and do not spread to other parts of the body like cancer does, their impact can be severe. The most worrying symptoms include heavy menstrual bleeding, intermenstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, and frequent urination caused by pressure on the bladder.

In some cases, fibroids also interfere with fertility by blocking or stretching the fallopian tubes or occupying the space where a baby should grow.

He added that women who delay childbirth and those who started menstruating very early are at a higher risk due to prolonged exposure to estrogen. He also noted that Black women tend to develop larger and more aggressive fibroids.

He cautioned against unverified herbal remedies, stating that while herbal medicine may have some benefits, but its content is not known.

Despite widespread fear surrounding fibroid surgery, the doctor encouraged women not to panic. He acknowledged that in rare cases, complications may require removal of the entire uterus, but emphasized that specialists always do everything possible to preserve fertility, especially in younger patients.
