Safer Internet Day Celebration slated for February 5

Safer Internet Day (SID) Celebration, an annual worldwide event will be held on Tuesday February 5 at the Labone Senior High School. The Safer Internet Day is observed globally every year in February to help promote the safe and positive use of the digital Technology for children and young people.
This is also to inspire a National conversation which is in line with the Ghana National Cyber Security Awareness programme aimed at promoting a safer use of digital   Technology in Ghana.
This year’s Safer Internet Day (SID) celebration themed—’Together for a better internet’ is to encourages individuals to create a better internet for everyone, especially the younger users by developing four, critical skill; (the 4Rs) Respect, Responsibility, Reasoning and Resilience.
Speaking on GBC’s Uniiq Breakfast Drive, Child online Protection lead, National Cyber Security Center with Ministry of Communication, Doctor Nana Kofi Annan, said child online protection is making the internet a safer place for children by protecting them from cyber crimes and other abuses that may jeopardize their future.
He said the children are the future of every nation therefore it is very important to ensure their safety and wellbeing.
He urged the public to participate in the event, adding that about 500 school children are expected to be participate. Also, the Country Rep from UNICEF will be present, Minister for Gender and children, Minister for Communication, among other dignitaries.
“We are going to join children globally to celebrate this day. We have the hope that through such celebration we will be driving home the relevance of ensuring that we have a safer internet,” he noted.
The Acting Director, Department of Children, Ministry of Gender Children and Social Protection, Mrs. Florence Eyisi Quartey also added that the Safer Internet Day celebration is to enable the Ministry to review the various laws that relate to children and take into account the critical role that the internet play in their lives.
To ensure that children understand that they are responsible whilst using the internet without committing internet crimes or abusing it.
