Somali football referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan has responded with calm professionalism after being denied entry into the United States for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, saying he remains focused on the next stage of his refereeing career.
The Somali official, who was set to become the first referee from his country at a World Cup, said he is choosing positivity despite the setback.
Artan thanked FIFA and CAF for their support during a difficult period and promised to keep raising his standards. He also expressed appreciation to the wider football community for the messages and encouragement he received after the news broke.
“Despite the circumstances, I am in a positive mood and I am focused on the next challenges in my refereeing career,” Artan said. He added, “I would like to thank FIFA and CAF for all their support and I promise to keep my refereeing levels up as I concentrate on the future.”
He also wished his fellow officials success at the tournament and said he looks forward to joining them in future competitions. His reaction has drawn praise across African football, with many commending the way he handled such a disappointing moment.
Artan’s absence is a major blow for Somali representation at the World Cup and a setback for African refereeing more broadly. Even so, his response has reinforced his reputation as one of the continent’s most respected and resilient officials.
