Security Analyst, David Agbee, has expressed skepticism that the two arrested members of the Delta Force Vigilante group who attacked the old Tafo MP will be prosecuted.
Explaining further, he said the Police may be handicapped because politicians will intervene in the matter.
Speaking on GBC’s Current Affairs programme, “Focus”, Mr. Agbee said the political parties are not committed to having vigilante groups disbanded because they work for them.
He said for the Police to be effective in dealing with vigilante groups, Ghanaians should rally behind them to get people who commit crimes arrested.
Mr. David Agbee said if the Police are not able to tackle the vigilante issue head-on, it will become as he puts it, ‘murkier’ going into the 2020 elections.
A Governance Expert, Fred Oduro Agyarko, said vigilante groups are emboldened to continue perpetrating dastardly acts because the political establishment invariably backs them.
He said if state institutions are functioning to the optimal level, there will not be the need for political parties to build para-security groups to provide them with security.
The Director of Communications and Corporate Affairs at the NCCE, Mrs. Joyce Afutu, said the arrest of the two Delta Force members by the Police is a good sign. However, she said prosecuting the issue to its ultimate end should now be the concern.
She said political parties must show enough commitment by disbanding vigilante groups amongst their ranks and channel their energies to good use.
