The Bono Regional Chapter of the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS), as part of national activities to see to the success of this year’s National Population and Housing Census has inaugurated an eight member committee to see to the successful execution of the 2020 Population and Housing census especially in the Sunyani Municipality.
The Committee comprises of the Sunyani Municipal Coordinating Director, National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), District Officer of the Statistical Service, Information Services Department, Population Council, Ghana Education Service, District Census Officer and a Representative from the Bono Regional House of Chiefs.
The 2020 population and Housing Census originally scheduled for March 2020 has been postponed to June this year. The change in date follows observations from the completed field census mapping exercise as well as redesigning technological interventions required for complete coverage, enhanced accuracy and timely release of the census results.
The conduct of the census is in accordance with the Statistical Service Law, 1985 (PNDCL 135), which empowers the Government Statistician to conduct statistical surveys and any census in Ghana.
The country previously had censuses in 1960, 1970, 1984, 2000 and 2010. The country is supposed to undertake a census exercise after every 10 years. The inauguration by the GSS is going on in all the 16 regions.
The swearing in of the Sunyani section of the inauguration of the eight member committee was conducted by the Bono Regional Statistician, Amatus Nobabumah.
Outlining the duty of the Committee, Mr Nobabumah said in an interview with GBC’s Radio Ghana, they are to see to the success of the exercise by Planning the census within the municipality, facilitate the recruitment of filed staff, publicise the importance of the exercise to the public, and ensure smooth work on the field among others.
He said, the Population and Housing Census has important uses as far as national development is concerned indicating the exercise will benefit the individual especially the unemployed.
According to Mr Nobabumah, the census will be unique in its adoption of digital and computer-assisted personal interviews that will make it a paperless exercise. Mr Nobabumah urged the committee to work diligently to see to the success of the exercise. The Chairman of the Committee, Mr. K.K Sencherey on behalf of his members promised to work hard to achieve the targeted task given them.
