Ten people have been imprisoned in Niger after they were arrested during several days of violent demonstrations against the restrictions put in place due to the coronavirus.

Young people set up barricades on the streets to protest against the overnight curfew and the ban on collective prayers.

The police say more than 100 people have been arrested in the capital, Niamey.

Officials say motorcyclists were caught distributing cans of petrol and several neighbourhoods were set on fire and private property destroyed.

The police used tear gas to disperse residents of the capital who were trying to organise prayers at a mosque on Sunday.
