Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh says the 2026 budget marks the strongest commitment to healthcare investment in years, describing it as “the most people-focused and health-centred budget” yet.

“The 2026 Budget is the most people focused and health centered budget I have seen in recent years”, he said.

Speaking at the Government Accountability Series today, December 1, 2025, he announced that the new Free Primary Healthcare package, worth GH¢1.5 billion, will be rolled out, while the Ghana Medical Trust Fund (MahamaCare) programme is now fully operational, with GH¢2.3 billion to support patients, stressing that President Mahama believes, provision of quality healthcare is a matter of right and not a privilege.

The Minister also confirmed that the construction of three new regional hospitals in the Savannah, Oti, and Western North regions will begin in 2026, with a budget allocation of GH¢600 million. He stressed that no uncompleted health project will be abandoned in that regard.

“No uncompleted hospital will be abandoned, despite the new ones being built”, he reiterated.

Mr. Akandoh further noted that government will continue paying recently recruited nurses and clear trainee allowances on time.

“We will continue to pay the 13,500 nurses we put on payroll this year”.
