As part of measures to avoid the further spread of the coronavirus, the Tema Metropolitan Assembly through its COVID-19 Task Force has taken stringent steps to open all the 54 main gates and decongest the Central Business Market.
To this end, additional market centres, have been created for the various groups of traders to do business. These include the Twedaase JHS Park, the Oninku Primary and JHS Park, and the Community 7 Park.
All fruits and vegetable sellers are to ply their trade at the Twedaase JHS, while all Root and Tuber crops sellers are to trade at the Oninku JHS Park, till further notice. Sellers of, Meat, Oil and, Spices, are to remain at the Central Market.
Speaking to Radio Ghana in Tema, the Head of the Public Relations of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly, Frank Asante said the Assembly is concerned about the consequences of the infections in the Metropolis. He called for concerted efforts to fight the coronavirus, saying the Assembly alone cannot take up the fight, hence individuals, and corporate institutions are expected to play vital roles in suppressing the spread of COVID-19 in the Tema Metropolis.
Mr. Asante noted that the Central Market is heavily congested and poses a high risk in the wake of the COVID 19 crisis, adding that the relocations are meant to decongest the market and ensure that enough spaces are available for crowd control and social distancing.
He appealed to the Traders to help the Assembly enforce the decision to reduce crowding, and observe the social distancing protocol.
