The Trades Union Congress TUC, has urged government to scrap taxes driving up the price of fuel.
The TUC in a statement reminded government of its promise to reduce fuel prices by abolishing the taxes in the petroleum price build-up, during the 2016 election campaign.
It notes that after eighteen months of the Akufo -Addo led-government, fuel prices have been adjusted upwards on 16 different occasions, going up by an average of more than 25 percent.
The TUC says despite the frequent upward adjustments, the minimum wage has gone up by 20 per cent, while the Base Pay on the Single Spine Salary Structure, has also increased by about 24 per cent.
Providing further clarification on the issue on Behind the News last night, Acting Secretary- General of the TUC, Joshua Ansah, said Ghanaians cannot afford further increases in fuel prices, since the wage bill does not correspond with the persistent hikes in fuel prices.
He, therefore, called on the government to honour its promise to Ghanaians, and put the needed interventions in place to arrest the situation, noting that the prevailing condition has considerably eroded incomes and worsened the plight of workers and their families.
