Two leftist candidates are laying claims to be leading in the first round of Tunisia’s Presidential election, in a poll that focused on high unemployment and a surge in the cost of living.
There are 24 candidates contesting in the election, the second, since longtime ruler Zine El Abidine Ben Ali was removed in the 2011 revolution.
There have been reports of low turn out , with voter apathy especially among the young. Counting is on-going with the Elections Commission reporting a 45 percent turn out, down from 64 percent recorded in the first round in 2014.
Kais Saied, a 61-year-old law professor and expert in constitutional affairs who ran a low-key campaign as an independent, claims to be in the lead for the runoff.
Media Mogul, Nabil Karoui, who is behind bars being under investigation for money laundering, has also claimed to have reached the second round.
Results are expected tomorrow.
