The Ghana Broadcasting Corporation’s (GBC) Upper West Regional Cameraman, William Mettle-Edmonds has been given an Honorary Award at the recently held Youth and Mentors Achievers Awards (YAMAA) in the Upper West Region.

He was awarded for his long years of service, dedication to the Upper West Region and excellent pictures and videos which have over the years told the story of the region helped in its development.

Mr. Mettle-Edmonds who has been serving in the capacity as the Corporation’s Regional Cameraman for the past twenty-five years dedicated the award to God and his family especially his wife who he said has been a very strong pillar in his life and service to his nation.

In an interview with Radio Ghana’s Mark Smith, Mr. Mettle-Edmonds admitted that it has not been an easy journey coming this far.

“When I came here the work was very tedious because the roads horrible. When you are going to Jirapa for example it was hell or even when you are going down south after SSNIT [a suburb in the Wa Municipality] the roads were not tarred and you had to pass through these potholes right down to Wenchi before you reach a tarred surface.”

“With the help of the reporter I came to meet, the late Chris Alalbila; he encouraged me that that is how it is, so we should carry on; and then we did until this time. So I am very pleased that at this time, the people of the Upper West Region have been able to recognize the efforts I have put into helping to build the region,” he explained.

Mr. Mettle-Edmonds was elated that with time, his work had gotten easier as technology continues to improve saying “after getting our stories, we were using tapes. So we parcel it and then send it to STC [State Transport Corporation] or there are times you getting somebody going [to Accra] and then they will send it [the tapes] to the gate of the Corporation to be picked up. Other times you have to give it to the driver and then he gets to Accra, he is tired and he forgets and so the stories are not used.”

“Now with the internet and new technology, you finish the story and in less than five minutes it is in Accra. Now the work is getting easier,” he added. He urged the youth to be disciplined and be resolute in their strife for excellence.

The Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) extended its reach to the then Upper Region about four decades ago to bring quality news and programs to the people of the region while sharing the story of the people with the rest of the country. The Corporation continues to serve the people of the Upper West Region helping to bring the needed development.

Mr Mettle-Edmonds was part of 13 Mentors who were awarded for their continuous and selfless dedication to the development of the Upper West Region and Ghana as a whole. The Youth and Mentors Achievers Awards (YAMAA) is the 9th in the series of awards to award deserving youth and mentors.
