Upper West Region to get military base soon

The newly appointed Chief of Army Staff, Major General Thomas Oppong Peprah said he is going to pursue the agenda of setting up a fully-fledged military base in the region “vehemently”.

Major General Oppong Peprah said this to the Upper west Regional Minister, Dr Hafiz Bin Salih when the former paid a courtesy call on latter at his office at Wa.

Major General Oppong Peprah said the visit to the Regional Minister was to formally introduce himself to the Minister while also using the opportunity to familiarise himself with the administrative, operational and logistical challenges of the troops stationed in the Upper West Region.

Major General Oppong Peprah thanked the Regional Minister, the chiefs and the people of the Waala Traditional Area for releasing lands to the military to build apartments for troops stationed in the region.

He also commended the Regional Coordinating Council for their continuous support to the troops in the region. He said although the threat of terrorism remains remote, the military is prepared to deal with any miscreant who intends to foment trouble within the border of Ghana.

The Upper West Regional Minister, Dr Hafiz Bin Salih maintained that although the region is relatively peaceful, there is a need for watchful eyes to be kept on the threat of terrorism. He commended the military detachment stationed in the Upper West Region for their continuous show of discipline.

Dr Bin Salih reiterated the need for the Upper West Region to have its own military base. The Chief of Army Staff, Major General Thomas Oppong Peprah was accompanied by an entourage from the General Army Headquarters and the Northern Command Headquarters.
