Vice President, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has called for greater perseverance, unity, and inclusion in national development, urging Ghanaians to embrace diversity and support children with special needs.

She made the call at the Fun Games of the New Horizon Special School in Accra, where she also donated sanitary and hygiene supplies to the institution.

The colourful event brought together teachers, caregivers, and parents to celebrate children with special needs, including those on the autism spectrum. Activities on the day included a 60-metre race, sack race, bottle-filling challenge, and wheelchair race.

Addressing the gathering, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang encouraged participants to “run the race with endurance,” in line with the theme of the programme. She described the event as inspiring and commended the school’s management and staff for their dedication to nurturing and empowering the children.

“Very special people, thank you very much for raising the horizon high this morning. Whether it is filling the bottle, the sack race, the wheelchair race, or pick the ball, you all did so well, and you ought to be very proud of yourselves,” she said.

She reminded the audience that development must be inclusive.“It can never be about us only. It is about recognising the differences we have and bringing them together, just like cloth weavers bring all the strands together for the pattern to emerge,” she added.

The Vice President donated 50 boxes of soap, 100 boxes of sanitary pads, and 50 bags of washing soap to improve hygiene in the school.

All participating children were declared winners and awarded gold medals amid cheers from parents and guests.
Management of the school expressed gratitude for the support, describing it as timely and impactful. The New Horizon Special School focuses on the development and empowerment of children with special needs.
