Volta Chiefs call on President Akufo-Addo

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has justified the processes leading to the creation of the new regions saying it’s in line with the provisions in the constitution and best practices elsewhere.

He described as unfortunate and disturbing, the agitations generated over who should vote and should not in the scheduled referendum in the Volta Region over the creation of the proposed Oti region.

Addressing a delegation of Chiefs from the Ketu South at the Jubilee House, President Akufo Addo appealed to the Chiefs to calm tempers down and alleyed fears the creation of the new district will lead some disturbances. Bright Ntramah has filed this report.

The Electoral Commission has completed a limited registration of voters in the affected regions to enable her hold the referendum on the creation of new regions. This decision seems not to have gone done well with some chiefs who wants the Voters in the entire affected region to cast their ballots.

President Akufo-Addo backed the decision of the Electoral commission adding that through out the history of Ghana, there has been the creation of New Regions and in all those periods, the people affected where those who voted and not the entire area or region in question.

The President also cited the recent referendum in Spain and observed that it was the Catalans who voted and not the whole of Spain.

The President called on the Chiefs and leaders of the Municipality to assist to bring an end to the agitations.

The President and Paramount Chief of Aflao Traditional Council, Torgbi Amenya Fiti , who led the forty man delegation asked President to intervene in the closure of various entry points along the Togo, Ghana boarder commonly called “Beats”.

He also asked for the division of the Ketu South municipality into two separate districts.

The chiefs also requested government to consider building a modern stadium in the Ketu municipality to enable municipality to develop the football and athletic potentials of the growing number of youth who have interest in sports.

He praised the government for the introduction of the free SHS policy, resumption of work.on the sea defense among others.

President Akufo Addo assured them that the he has taken note of the request made and will receive immediate attention.
