Ghana’s Vice President, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, declared sports and recreation essential drivers of national development, linking the sector directly to economic expansion, social unity and public health during a key visit to the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.

She praised ongoing reforms and received updates on initiatives shaping a stronger sports ecosystem.

Shaking hands with Sports Minister Kofi Adams and accepting a branded jersey, Opoku-Agyemang reaffirmed the government’s full backing for the ministry’s ambitions.

Minister Adams detailed bold actions taken under his leadership, including swift responses to tragedies that rocked Ghanaian sports.

After a football fan’s death, the ministry halted the Premier League, launched safety audits, and established a dedicated Sports Police Unit.

In boxing, following the passing of athlete Gabriel Olanrewaju, officials revamped regulations and rolled out nationwide medical protocols to protect competitors.

Financial milestones shone through as well, with the ministry clearing over $904,000 in backlog salaries for Black Stars staff.

Parliament’s recent passage of the Ghana Sports Fund Bill now promises steady funding for infrastructure and talent development, fueling optimism across the sector.

Opoku-Agyemang hailed Adams for his “excellent leadership” over the past year, urging public servants to prioritize service to humanity.

She pledged personal support, especially for timely resource allocation, while stressing proactive solutions to meet Ghanaians’ needs and harness sports’ economic power.

Chief Director Wilhelmina Asamoah called the visit a morale booster for staff, inspiring harder work toward excellence.

The ministry’s PR unit highlighted how Opoku-Agyemang’s engagement signals a united front to nurture Ghana’s sporting talents for global stages, blending social cohesion with real growth.
