The Minister for Works, Housing and Water Resources, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, has announced major strides in government efforts to protect Ghana’s coastline from erosion and tidal wave destruction. The Minister assures Ghanaians of sustained investment in coastal resilience and a commitment to finish the ongoing projects on time.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, Mr. Adjei disclosed that a contract has been awarded for Phase II of the Blekusu Coastal Protection Project, a key intervention aimed at addressing years of coastal erosion tidal wave disruptions and destructions in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region.
“A contract has been awarded for Phase Two of the Blekusu Coastal Protection Project, and in August last year, His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama officially broke ground for the commencement of this critical intervention,” the Minister stated.
He indicated that the project is already yielding positive results, with works progressing steadily since its commencement.
“As of today, the project is about 25 per cent complete, and I am pleased to report that calm has already been restored along the coastline, offering much-needed relief to residents who have lived under constant threat from tidal waves,” Mr. Adjei noted.
Touching on broader coastal defence initiatives, the Minister revealed that the Lower Volta Basin Sea Defence Corridor has been incorporated into the WACA Resilience Investment Project Phase II, allowing for expanded technical and financial support.
“The Lower Volta Basin Sea Defence Corridor has now been brought under WACA Phase Two, and we are currently undertaking technical assessments and environmental impact studies to ensure that the project is implemented responsibly and sustainably,” he explained.
Mr. Adjei further announced that government is planning ahead for additional coastal protection works across the country.
“Feasibility studies have commenced for future projects at Shama–Apor, Ningo–Prampram Phase Two, and Ada West, as part of our long-term strategy to secure Ghana’s coastline against erosion and climate-related risks,” he said.
The Minister emphasized government’s commitment to accountability and transparency, stressing that coastal protection remains a national priority.
“Our goal is to protect lives, livelihoods and critical infrastructure while ensuring value for money and full accountability in the delivery of these projects,” Mr. Adjei assured.
