You need to focus on quality not quantity-UPNMG to Nursing Training Schools

The Upper West Regional President of the Union of Professional Nurses and Midwives Ghana (UPNMG) Samuel Piue Lasir has expressed worry about the negative tag given to nurses, midwives and other health professionals.

Mr. Lasir admitted that over the past few years health professionals have been identified as disrespectful, arrogant and lazy. He said these tags bring the nursing profession into disrepute. He said attributed the current development to the “influx of nurses in the system [health profession]”. 

He said over the years, some training colleges have focused on producing huge numbers of nurses, midwives and other health professionals rather than focusing on producing quality nurses who make professionalism their hallmark.

Mr. Lasir admitted that end result of these actions are nurses lack professionalism, are not punctual or well versed in their duties as nurses or midwives.

To address the negative labels garnered by the profession, the Upper West Regional President of the UPNMG said his union will  work with the Ministry of Health and its sub agencies along with Nursing Training Institutions across the country to inculcate in nurses the culture of excellence and punctuality.

“We collaborate with the Principals across the Training Colleges here [in Ghana] so that if there is a new recruit [nurse or midwife], we [UPNMG] would be part of the interview panel, we would be part of their matriculation, we would be part of their graduation so that  from time to time, we engage these students and we let them understand the profession they have chosen. We are coming to rekindle the attitude of professionalism [in the nursing profession],” he explained.

Mr. Lasir shared these sentiments while interacting with Radio Ghana’s Mark Smith in Wa.

The Union of Professional Nurses and Midwives Ghana (UPNMG) was formed in November 2017 as a breakaway group from the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA).

The breakaway was as a result of differences in opinions on how to manage funds that were deducted from salaries of nurses and midwives.

The Upper West Regional President of UPNMG, Samuel Piue Lasir stressed on the need for the Association to work with heads of Nursing Training Colleges and other health institutions to ensure that health professionals perform their duties with excellence.

The Union received their Trade Union Certificate this year.

Mr. Piue Lasir said that they “are now on the Controller and Accountant General System.” He added that the new development means “there is another association or mouthpiece” a nurse can join.

Mr. Lasir said the welfare of nurses and other health professionals should be made paramount.

He said nurses can only be efficient if they live comfortable lives.

The Upper West Regional President of (UPNMG) said the Union offers nurses loans with low interests to be enable them to own their own homes or vehicles.

He added that nurses and their families can now benefit from insurance packages due to their association with UPNMG.

Mr. Lasir added that as a Union, one of its core duties is to stand in for members in times of difficulty so that they can work efficiently.
