As Honourable Emmanuel Kwasi Bedzrah approaches the end of his fifth term in Parliament, marking 20 years of continuous service by 2028, some constituents are raising questions about whether it may be time for him to step aside and make way for new leadership.

First elected in 2008, Hon. Bedzrah has represented the Ho West Constituency since January 2009. However, his long tenure has not been without criticism. Some constituents, particularly the youth and party grassroots, have expressed concerns over what they describe as a lack of significant progress in the area and limited visibility in parliamentary debates. These concerns have reportedly led some former supporters to shift allegiance to the opposition.

Throughout his political career, Mr. Bedzrah has faced several challengers during party primaries. In his campaigns for the third, fourth, and fifth terms, he is said to have assured delegates that he would not seek re-election in subsequent primaries. Despite these assurances, he has continued to contest and win, benefiting from both incumbency and strong financial backing, factors seen as increasingly influential in Ghanaian politics.

Supporters of the MP point to his current role as Chairman of the GETFund Board and the Parliamentary Committee on Energy, as well as his ability to secure appointments and job placements for some loyalists. These advantages, along with strong local party structures believed to be aligned with him, have reinforced his position.

However, critics argue that after two decades in office, it may be time for the MP to honour his past commitments and allow for new perspectives and ideas in the constituency’s leadership. They suggest that stepping down would not only help unify the party but also reenergize its base, particularly the youth.

It is also noted that, historically, no MP from the constituency has served more than three terms. Hon. Bedzrah is the first to reach five, which some believe is a testament to the trust placed in him, and a reason to consider a dignified exit in gratitude.

With the Mahama-led government channeling more development resources to constituencies and district assemblies, many believe the MP has an opportunity to complete his final term on a high note. A well-planned departure, they argue, would pave the way for new leadership while preserving party unity ahead of the 2028 general elections.

While some may encourage him to contest again, others hope he will reflect on the broader interest of the NDC in Ho West and consider stepping aside gracefully, helping to strengthen the party’s fortunes in the years to come.
