In a solemn and dignified ceremony at the Black Star Square in Accra, Ghana, on Friday August 15, 2025, the nation bid a final farewell to the victims of the tragic military helicopter crash that occurred on August 6, 2025, near Adansi Akrofuom in the Ashanti Region.

The helicopter, which was en route to Obuasi, went down under tragic circumstances, claiming the lives of eight individuals including five government officials and three crew members.

The state funeral honoured the memory of six out of the eight fallen heroes who perished while on national duty. The remaining two victims were laid to rest earlier, in accordance with Islamic burial rites, which require swift interment.

Among those who perished were:

Samuel Aboagye, Deputy Director-General of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO)

Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Minister of Defence

Alhaji Dr Murtala Mohammed, Member of Parliament for Tamale Central and Minister of Environment, Science, and Technology

Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator

Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress

Scores of mourners thronged to the Black Star Square draped in black or red and heavy with grief, to bid a final farewell to the departed.

From high-ranking government officials and members of the diplomatic corps to traditional leaders, colleagues, families, and everyday citizens, the outpouring of emotion reflected the deep national sorrow over the loss.

The atmosphere was marked by solemn music, military honors, and tributes that echoed the dedication and sacrifice of the eight individuals who died in service to the nation.
