Policy research and advocacy NGO, Africa Education Watch, says more teenage girls are likely to be pregnant if schools remained closed.

This follows research conducted in 200 schools across the country, including 100 junior high schools and senior high school during the reopening period for final year students.

Findings from the research showed that 20 percent of the schools sampled recorded cases of girls not returning to school because 85 percent of the girls were pregnant and 15 percent were married.

Government has however announced that students at the primary level are to resume school in January 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Speaking on GBC’s ‘Behind the news’, Executive Director of Africa Education Watch, Kofi Asare said they are not calling for schools to reopen because of the increase in teenage pregnancies but asking NGOs, Parents and Traditional leaders to intensify their social responsibilities of encouraging girls to lead a more responsible life.
