The Ghana Badminton Association has organised a coaching and technical officiating course for Badminton coaches and technical instructors in Ho, the Volta Regional capital as part of efforts to promote the sport and to whip up interest among the youths.
The course which is the first of its kind in the region was the fourth coaching and officiating course to be organized this year by the association.
It was aimed at training coaches and technical officials to train interested persons to deliver badminton in the tertiary, second cycle schools, and community clubs.
The Association has initiated the Badminton in School Programme which is meant to deliver safe and fun Badminton lessons for children in the age bracket of 5-18.
The Badminton in Schools Programme would be introduced in schools and communities in the Volta and Oti Regions through the just-ended coaching and technical officiating course with an overall objective of promoting the sport.
The
President of the Ghana Badminton Association, Evans Yeboah who led a four-member team of facilitators disclosed that “the aim of the school’s program is to deliver 682 licensed coaches across the country by 2025.”
He added that the just-ended workshop would assist trained coaches and technical men in expanding the foundation of the sport to all schools and districts to become the most preferred sport in the region.
“The first technical program in the volta region highlights the needed teaching skill delivery to the region, and together with our affiliates, partners and regional executives we are making Badminton a sport for all school-going age”.
Mr. Yeboah expects “Every school-going child would have learned how to play badminton as a preferred sport in Ghana.” Mr. Yeboah said.
Participants were taken through Badminton techniques and technical officiating, career progression in refereeing, umpiring, and line judging, and the rules and regulations of the sport.
They were awarded certificates and lesson plans that would guide them to administer Badminton in schools as well as reporting templates.
One of the participants, Gilbert Aguadze who expressed his excitement after the course, said “We are ready to develop the sport in the region”
In a bid to strengthen the governance structure of the association in the region, Mr. Yeboanh announced that forms are available for administrative positions.
