Today (March 15) will go down in history as the day when 64 stakeholders in Olympic sports, including Presidents, General Secretaries and Vice Presidents of various national federations, elect new Executives of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) at the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences in Accra to serve for a four-year term.

Thirty-five candidates are vying for twelve positions within the organogram of the GOC, and on top of this is the election of the President of the GOC, which is being contested by two candidates.

Incumbent President of GOC, Ben Nunoo Mensah, is being challenged by General Secretary, Richard Akpokavie, for the prestigious presidential position.

After filing their nomination, the two candidates have sent strong campaign messages of improving the fortunes of the GOC to make it more attractive to athletes and the corporate world.

Never in the history of the GOC, which was formerly called Gold Coast Olympics Committee when it was established in 1951, has there been such clamour for the soul of the committee.

As part of his campaign message, Mr. Akpokavie said if elected, he would seek the welfare of athletes by offering them scholarships and grants for them to build their capacity more fruitfully.
