Spain have confirmed the return of former Barcelona boss Luis Enrique as manager, five months after he stepped down from the role to be with his daughter.

Nine-year-old Xana was terminally ill with bone cancer and tragically passed away in August. While Enrique left to care for his daughter, assistant boss Robert Moreno was promoted to first-team manager initially until the end of Euro 2020.

However, Spain called a press conference to reveal the news that Enrique was returning, with president Luis Rubiales confirming that he has returned to his position as manager with immediate effect.

The interim boss did admit back in September that he was prepared to step down immediately if Enrique decided he was ready to return to work, insisting he would be honoured to continue to work as Enrique’s assistant.

In Enrique’s absence, Moreno led Spain to an undefeated Euro 2020 qualification campaign, picking up seven wins and two draws from his nine games in charge.

The former Barcelona manager spent 11 months in charge of the team before stepping aside last summer, but was unable to steer Spain to UEFA Nations League glory as the team crashed out in the group stage following defeats to both England and Croatia.

He will be hoping for more success next summer, when Spain will enter the tournament as one of the favourites to lift the trophy.
