The Greater Accra Indoors Games Association in collaboration with McDan Foundation has successfully launched the inaugural edition of McDan Playing Cards tournament 2020/2021 at the Ussher fort gardens in Accra.

Playing cards competition started at James Town in the early 60s and it remains one of the fast-growing and loved sports amongst the majority of the people of the coastal belt and other areas across the country.

According to business mogul Dr Daniel McKorley—the special guest of honor who gracefully graced the occasion—it’s his desire and joy to give back to society in a positive way to impact lives.

“The first time I got here, I was excited and when I saw what was going on here I was amazed. Bringing the youth together under one umbrella like this I believe is the best thing anybody can give back to society. I will come and play with them whenever I can and I will kit them also and as well give whatever they need to play.”

“There is a lot of unemployment in the society and so some of these youth are not engaged in doing anything so when you bring them together like this it will definitely reduce social vices. And most of all we don’t do politics, we care for all, we just want to play and have fun together that all,” he said.

He further noted that this year’s event is to promote peace, love, and unity among Ghanaians as the nation goes to the polls to retain or elect new political leaders.

The Greater Accra indoors association can boast of up to 14 Playing Cards Clubs are expected to compete in 26-week league which is divided into two, first-round lasting for 13 weeks and the second round also will last for 13 weeks before the winner is crowned.

The 14 playing teams include Victory, Show Boys, Avengers, Mighty Jets, Magic Hands, Nii Sei, Peace Arrows, Money Team Mighty Warriors, Finishing Powers, U-TV, Nii Klan, and Nyame B.K will battle for the ultimate cash prize of GH₵10,000 (1st), GH₵ 5000 (2nd), GH₵2000 (3rd) with all participating teams taking GH₵ 1000 each on matchday 26.

Organisers of the competition, lead by Paul Kwei Gabah, expressed joy and gratitude to McDan for supporting the association with the good logistics which will go a long way to support the growth of the playing card game. He thanked all executives and charged players to avoid fomenting troubles and be disciplined throughout the tournaments
