The National Sports Authority (NSA), has debunked the assertion that renting out Accra Sports Stadium for an entertainment concert in December last year was a bad idea.

Director General of the Authority, Professor Peter Twumasi, facing the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament, defended the decision, stating that there’s nothing wrong with his organisation deciding to rent out the stadium for concerts.

In December 2023, the National Sports Authority decided to close the Accra Sports Stadium for social events, including a concert headlined by Stonebwoy while the Ghana Premier League was in motion, leading to criticism from some Ghanaians.

The NSA stated that the purpose of renting the stadium was to generate revenue to renovate the stadium, which an estimated amount of GHS70,000.00 was paid into the account of the National Sports Authority.

“Even Independence celebration, we did it at the Tamale, Cape Coast, Baba Yara Stadium, but the question is, are you able to recover it and get back to the sporting activities? Yes, we do. We do recover.

Before we shifted our sporting activities to other stadia, we made mention of this to all stakeholders that in December, a particular period will be used for other events which are not sporting, and the revenue for it should be able to recover entirely everything,” Peter Twumasi indicated on Monday, February 5.
