Olympic games opens with spectacular display without spectators due to Covid-19

The official opening of the much awaited 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan has begun after a year’s delay with a grand opening ceremony at the Tokyo Olympic Stadium without spectators due to fears of the spread of covid-19.

Japan’s Emperor Naruhito is among the one thousand VIPs and delegates attending.US First Lady, Jill Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron are also among the VIPs there.

A minute silence was observed in memory of all who have died since the onset of the covid-19 pandemic.

With an unexpected additional year of preparation under their belts, more than 11 thousand 300 athletes from 207 nations will compete over the next couple of weeks, all vying to get their hands on the medal they have worked so long for. Here are excerpts from the opening ceremony.
