By Tilda Acorlor

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif says government has shown commitment to the development of sports in the country following the continuation of works at the Multi-Purpose Youth Resource Center at Adaklu near Ho, the Volta Regional Capital.

The sector minister made the assertion when he toured the project site on Monday, February 13, 2023.

Hon. Mustapha Ussif, who was excited about the progress of the work, said facilities like the Multi-purpose Youth Resources Center will develop sporting talents as the ministry’s focus shifts from sports promotion to sports development.

“Government has shown commitment to sports development in the country, we are shifting from Sports promotion to development and if we are to achieve this objective set for us then it means we need facilities such as this to be able to develop talents,” the minister said.

Work on the Multipurpose Youth Resource Center is speedily progressing ahead of the Independence Day Celebration, which will host the rest of Ghana and a few dignitaries across the world.

The Volta Region is hosting this year’s 66th Independence Day celebration, with the parade scheduled to take place at the new Multi-Purpose Sporting facility.

This has hastened work on the project, which started in 2018 but came to a halt for close to four years due to what officials claim was lack of funds.

Work resumed at the facility on January 10, 2023.

The Managing Director of Wilkado Construction, Togbe Gbeworza II, who is in charge of the project, said work is 73% complete. He is confident the facility will take shape by March 6 for Ghana’s Independence Day celebration.

Togbe is hopeful the whole project will be completed and commissioned by June 2023.

“We are about 73% of work done” we resumed work on the 10 of January, and we are working concurrently. We will finish the entire project by June this year,” he said.

When the facility is completed, it will house a FIFA Standard Pitch, an eight-lane athletic track, and a handball. Basketball, Volleyball, and Table Tennis Courts, a Gymnasium, an ICT Center, a Restaurant Entrepreneurship and Counseling Center.

The Youth and Sports Minister was accompanied by the Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Authority (NYA), Pius Enam Hadzide, and other officials.

They will continue their tour to the Eastern Region to inspect the state of the Multi-Purpose Youth Resource Center in the Region.
