Tahiru tipped to win SWAG Para Athlete of the Year

Tahiru Haruna who is an African Heavyweight Champion in Para Armwrestling has been tipped to win the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) Para Athlete of the Year Award at the 44th awards ceremony which comes off on Saturday May 11, 2019 at the Accra International Conference Center.

Haruna Tahiru made it to the gold podium after winning the +75kg. he is competing against Fred Assor, a Tandem Cyclist.

Tahiru is highly tipped to win due to his versatility, also as a body builder, weightlifter and powerlifter.

The disciplined sports hero represented Ghana as a member of the Golden Arms at the 2018 African Armwrestling competition and performed marvelously.

The national armwrestling team, Golden Arms bagged 43 medals in the championship with a total of 16 gold medals, 15 silver medals as well as 12 bronze medals in 25 different weight categories to enable them win the competition.

Alberta Ampomah will join Haruna Tahiru to take home the Armwrestler of the year award in both the female and male categories.

Others expected to collect the prestigious SWAG Awards are Michael Arko and Rafatu Inusah for male and female rugby players of the year, Kojo Barni for the professional golfer of the year award and female athlete Hor Halutie expected to be rewarded the prospect of the year.

Others named in the winning list are Table Tennis player Samuel Akayade and hockey ace Dennis Ababio both going for dedication and valour. Boxing and entertainment promotion outfit, Cabic Promotions will take the award for promoter of the year.

IBF World Lightweight champion Richard Oblitey Commey will have a straight fight with Isaac Dogboe for the professional boxer of the year award, while Janet Amponsah and Jesse Lartey will go home with the athlete of the year and amateur boxer of the year, respectively.

National ping pong top seed Derek Abrefa and female ace player Celia Baah Danso will be rewarded with the male and female table tennis players of the year award, respectively.

The stakes will be high for Coach of the Year award as hockey takes centre stage, with Ebenezer Frimpong of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Boakye Danquah (Exchequers) and Richmond Attipoe also of Exchequers vying for the award on the night.

There will be 10 special awards for individuals, corporate entities and persons on the night. They are the Binatone Ghana Limited, Greater Accra Handball Association and kickboxer Jonathan Euro.

The rest are Casely Hayford Hall, Ghana Revenue Authority, Winter Olympian Akwasi Frimpong, Kofikrom Pharmacy, Albert K Frimpong TI AMASS SHS and Daniel Nii Mensah of Dan Ve Van fame for supporting disabled sports.
