Savelugu School for the Deaf, a special residential school in the Northern Region, has received sports equipment to help its pupils in their preparation and participation in competitions.

The items received included ten balls, two basketballs, two volleyballs, full kit of two sets of jerseys, full set of socks, whistles, five bags of rice and three gallons cooking oil.

Mr. Gary Al-Smith, United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Influencer, procured the items through his network on social media and in sports and presented them to the authorities of the Savelugu School for the Deaf at its compound at Savelugu on Thursday.

Mr. Al-Smith’s gesture followed a request to him by one of the pupils of the school, Master Albert Abdul Rashid, in May, this year, to supply them with sports equipment to enable them play football.

Mr Al-Smith, who is also Sports Journalist, was hopeful that the support would go a long way to improve sports activities amongst pupils in the school and consequently their educational achievements.

He emphasized the need for every child to be supported to realize their full potential saying “For Every Child, Every Right”.

Alhaji Mohammed Haroun, Northern Regional Director of Education encouraged the pupils of the school not to feel daunted by their situation but to see themselves as equal to others and work hard to ensure success.

Haroun reminded teachers that from September, this year, in line with the universal curriculum, schools must adopt the play method of teaching from kindergarten to primary three for improved education outcome.

He thanked the UNICEF Influencer for the support saying it was in line with government’s policy to ensure that no child was left behind.

Madam Gertrude Dasah, Headmistress of Savelugu School for the Deaf said sports activities were an area the pupils were interested in assuring that the School would continue to work to impart skills to the pupils to help them to contribute to national development.

Chief of UNICEF Field Office in Tamale, Madam Margaret Gwada, lauded the Savelugu School for the Deaf for its contribution to ensure equal opportunities for all children.

Meanwhile, UNICEF has presented 10 copies of Sign Language Dictionaries to the Savelugu School for the Deaf to help improve teaching and learning at the school.
