WWE trapped in lawsuit over alleged racial discrimination

By: Roberta Gayode Modin

Former World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) Writer, Britney Abrahams has sued Vince McMahon and WWE for wrongful termination over her refusal to write a series of racist scripts for WWE TV, per management’s demand.

The complaint was filed on April 24 in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York on behalf of Britney Abrahams by the Cochran Firm to demand  “reinstatement, damages, declaratory judgment, and an injunction restraining defendants from engaging in such unlawful conduct.”

In the complaint filed to the court, Abrahams disclosed she was tasked to employ racial and stereotypical languages in her script for Black wrestlers like Bianca Belair and Appollo crews.

The longest Women Championship title holder, Bianca Belair was to be presented as a ghetto character who spoke in stereotypical jargon.

According to Abrahams, a story pitch included having Apollo Crews speak with a Nigerian accent because of his  Nigerian lineage; giving Shane Thorne a hunting gimmick that would hunt and capture black wrestlers, particularly Reggie. A storyline where Mansoor would reveal he was behind 9/11.

Another storyline included a  love triangle story between Mansoor, Aliyah, and Angel Garza that was to present Aliyah as a bimbo who was being objectified by both men.

Britney Abrahams is a  Black woman who worked for WWE Smackdown! and WWE Monday Night RAW in 2020.  She was fired by the WWE in April 2022 for taking a WrestleMania 38 branded chair,  a practice she said was  “common” and that White male writers were not punished for it.
