Barcelona will not be triggering the purchase option on Ghanaian midfielder Abdul Aziz Issah, marking a disappointing conclusion to what many believed could be the start of a successful European career, according to SPORT. Issah, who joined Barcelona on loan in September 2024 from Dreams FC in Ghana, initially drew attention with high expectations from fans and club officials.

His involvement in first-team training sessions with head coach Hansi-Dieter Flick early on fueled optimism that the club had uncovered a hidden gem. The midfielder’s potential was widely recognized, especially considering his standout performances in Ghana’s junior ranks. Many believed that Issah’s talent could eventually translate into a significant role within Barcelona’s senior squad.

However, reality has proven to be far from those initial hopes. During his time at Barcelona, Issah has only played a total of 26 minutes across two matches for Barcelona Atletic. Despite his limited appearances, his performance at the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations reignited discussions about his potential, showcasing his talent on an international stage and hinting at a promising future.

Despite a pressing need for midfield options and injuries within the squad, Issah was left out of matchday squads for months, fueling speculation about his development and integration into the team. The stark contrast between his bright international performances and his limited opportunities at Barcelona raised questions about the technical team’s confidence in his readiness to adapt to European football.

With his buyout clause expiring, Barcelona has ultimately missed the chance to secure a player with significant upside. The club’s decision not to exercise the purchase option reflects a cautious approach, but many see it as a missed opportunity to develop a young talent who still has the potential to grow into a key player in the future.
